Fall 2009 Looks

"Strike a Pose there's Nothing to it Vogue"
The images shown in this blog post are taken directly from Elle.com

It seems like the summer had finally started to heat up and we're already looking at Fall colors and styles. September is right around the corner whether we like it or not. So, why not keep our chins up and just look at the new fashions and makeup trends as something to look forward to?!

With that in mind, lets look at what we've been seeing on the runway for fall so far.

When you think of fall's edgy look, think kind of gothy, kind of glamour, somewhat fresh and very sexy:) OMG THATS MEEEEE!!! lol.. KIDDING!!

It seems that at more than one show the MUA's have decided that this is THE look for fall. Personally, I like it. I love the fact that with this particular trend, less is NOT more...MORE is more.

Now, granted, not all of these looks are going to be wearable off the runway, but variations of them can be kind of workable for the club scene. Not every makeup look will go with every outfit either..LOL.. so don't try to rock this next look with a pair of capri pants and a t-shirt.

See what I mean? It's a little much, but kinda hott at the same time :) If you can imagine a tamed down version of this you can probably sport it, but you're going to have to be kind of creative with how you use the blue.

Obviously we don't look at Jean Paul Gaultier's Fall look and think THIS IS SOO ME THIS FALL but it is something to admire.

Personally, I feel that the over all idea of this coming seasons fashion looks are not necessarily an example of what you should be trying to COPY. I think it's more of an inspirational spring board for you. What is the lesson? Don't be afraid of color. Don't be afraid to make a bold statement. Let the more agressive side of you out every once in a while this fall.

Don't be scurrrrddd.. LOL.. It's only makeup. And at the end of the day, it all comes out in the wash:)

Aveda Does it Again

Here's an interesting article I found in my inbox today:) It's to do with Aveda, Estee Lauder's strongest selling brand. I'm sure that's not news to many of you but what I'm about to tell you just might be:)

Now we all know that everyone seems to be going "Green" and pushing for more natural products, organic food and recyclable packaging. It's a shame that it took the world's reaction to our poison to get everyone to start looking at these options less of an "option" and more of a "necessity".

All and still, there are many cosmetics companies out there that are doing their part to help out mother earth and.. well.. mothers..LOL.. Nah, it's for everyone, I just thought that was cute..

Anywhoodles, here's an interesting article that might interest you as well. As makeup artists, we all have to TRY to do our part to continue to deliver the best service we can, but also to do so with respect and awareness to ourselves, our clients and well.. our planet.

The following article was taken directly from their website:)

Aveda reformulates make-up line with natural pigments

By Simon Pitman, 23-Jul-2008

Related topics: Products & Markets, Color Cosmetics

Leading natural cosmetics provider Aveda has updated and expanded its Uruku make-up collection, opting for natural annatto pigment instead of synthetics.

The range now includes a new bronzer, an updated and reformulated lip pigment line, together with a new eye accent and cheek/lip crème, all benefitting from the use of the annatto, which is a powdered pigment derived from urukum and mica, and is a light reflecting mineral.

Aveda says that this pigment delivers lasting color for all skin types, with the added benefit of being naturally derived, reducing the risk of toxicity and other drawbacks associated with synthetic pigments.

Tapping into the bronzed look

Tapping into the fashion for bronzing products, the range includes the bronzer and accompanying brush made from cruelty-free taklon bristles.

The bronzer has been formulated to include the skin conditioning ingredient tocopherol, a natural vitamin E soy that contains powerful antioxidants, said to help optimize skin health and complexion.

As well as including the annatto pigment, the new lip pigment contains Brazilian botanical oils derived from organic babassu, maracuja and pequi. It is also fragranced with an organic essential oil consisting of vanilla, anis, cinnamon and mint essential oils.

The reformulated lip pigment range comes with the addition of three new shades - arrowroot, maracuja and sheer ivory nut, adding to the ten other shades that were already in the line.

Conditioning complex

The new eye accent product has also been formulated with the annatto pigment and benefits from protecting botanicals of organic babassu oil and a cupuacu conditioning complex, which comes in four shades.

Completing the range is the cheek and lip crème, which, together with the addition of the natural pigment, also benefits from the same botanical and conditioning complex as the eye accent product and comes in three shades.

So now that you have this information, you can't "un-have" it..LOL.. Hopefully you will ALL look into this makeup, even just to see how it works for your kit, clients and yourselves. It's worth a shot. At least then you can say you gave it "the old college try" and decide from there if it did or didn't work for you:)

Airbrush. It's not just for celebs anymore!!

I look through magazines and admire the skin tone and sheer perfection of so many models and actresses. The beauty that comes in my mailbox through Elle, Cosmo, Glamour, Latina, Marie Claire...(Yes I have A LOT of subscriptions...LOL). I mean how can you NOT? Look at Eva Mendez, Eva Longoria, Helena Christiansen, Madonna!! Now, granted these women are already beautiful, fit and confident, but..... you can't tell me that these women don't have bad hair days, puffy eyes, an occasional break out etc.. Of course they do!

It doesn't help that a lot of designers, cosmetic companies and magazines use girls in their late teens to early 20's to advertise their eye cream, or anti-wrinkle serums. Nothing like making us all feel as though we NEED what they've got to make us look like that...LOL..

Just looking at the tabloids should tell you that these celebs don't ALWAYS look fabulous. You can Google "before and afters" and you will get a plethora of images from Brittany Spears, Christina Aguilera, Cher, Jennifer Garner and even Halle Berry. Though I'm not a fan of calling out these ladies in their "less than perfect" state, I am an advocate of helping other women realize that they're not so different from those who have access to a professional make up artist at any given time.

Remember sitting around with your friends admiring the women in your favorite magazine and inevitably one of you blurt out "That's airbrushed". For so long we mistakenly gave credit to airbrush when in fact it was photo shop. Personally, I heart photo shop..LOL... BUT... lets not take away from the new airbrush craze that is the airbrush compressor!!!

There are SOOO many companies that sell their own version of "THE BEST" compressor. From OCC (Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics), Temptu, Luminess & Dinair they've all got something for everyone. I guess it just depends on how much you can spend and how much you will use your new compressor and airbrush.

Lets assume you've already purchased your compressor and airbrush. You've even got a bunch of foundation, contours, highlighters, shadows etc... Now, what will you do with it? Lets face it, you don't want to WASTE your product attempting to teach yourself how to use your machine. At least not without having SOME idea of what to do in the first place.

I would suggest you take a class. This way you have professional makeup artists who are well versed in using the machines and have techniques on how to simplify the process for you. This is of course assuming you have the MONEY to take a class. If you don't.. don't worry!! There is another option.

Remember, you can find just about ANYTHING on the Internet. You don't HAVE to go pay for a class if you absolutely can't afford it. Granted, being in a classroom has it's advantages, since you can ask questions that YOU are in need of having answered and that's not necessarily the case with online learning but still.. lets not turn our noses up at online learning.

There are many companies who now offer a detailed tutorial on how to use their machines & their makeup. Now you can tune in and get ready to take notes, or get ready to work right along side with them.

Here are just a few of the websites that I've found that can help you with whatever compressor you may have. Some of them tell you the pressure to use some of them don't. So there will be some things you have to figure out on your own if you're doing this online.

www.luminessworkshop.com
www.temptupro.com
www.youtube.com
www.laurelcosmetics.com

Now these are just a few that I found for you but use your Google search engine and type different key words. Give yourself a fighting chance to catch up to others who have already mastered the art of airbrush.

I would suggest having someone you can practice on with you. Turn on your computer and press play. As they show you what to do, do it at the same time. You can pause the feed until you catch up, rewind if you didn't quite catch what they said and re-play if you would like to see it all over again. You can then compare your technique with theirs, your outcome to theirs and make note of what you need to practice.

I'm sure you already know that you don't have to reserve your airbrush compressor for clients. Give yourself the luxury of airbrush to enhance or conceal your features by finding the shade that's just right for you. Master the application and make it the easiest way to give yourself a "feel good" pick me up on a daily basis.

Fall Line Up

Don't blink or you'll miss the rest of the summer!!!

I know we're juuuust starting to feel like summer and already we're seeing "Back to School" sales going on. The poor kids barely started their summer and already parents are ready to send them back. I for one, was disgusted to see the first back to school sale commercial and flipped the channel when it came on to spare my li'l guy.

For the rest of us however, we do have to be sure we're prepared with next seasons trends so we can be on the cusp of what's "now"....lest we get bypassed by someone who did... Never that!! LOL.

Anywhoodles, looking at the bright side of things lets look at what dropped into my inbox from the email fairies for the color of the season... Betcha can't guess... Betcha can:)

For those of you who said "Red", you get a gold star... If you said "True Red" then you get a Platinum Star!! LOL... It's not about brown reds or orange reds it's a true red that will keep you right where you need to be this Fall. Thanks to the folks at "Who, What, Where" we have this information nice and early so we can make sure our kits have at least one or two true red lipsticks ready to use:)

Moving right along to what we (or they) will be WEARING this fall... The lovely people at ShopStyle.com were kind enough to email this lovely montage:

I know it's kind of small, but what you're seeing here is plaids, prints & heavy metals. So when you're out shopping, feel free to pick up a trendy top or bottom to show that you're not COMPLETELY out of it. Artists are unique, yes, but they're not without style. Doesn't have to be the style everyone else is wearing, but let it be known that you're in the "Know".

"To Be A Star"

"To Be A Star"

I'd like to introduce you all to the new upcoming event called "To Be a Star".
This is a web based reality show to kick all other reality shows butts!! LOL.. And I'm not just saying that because I'm going to be a part of it..LOL.. well, maybe just a little..:)

But seriously, this new reality show is a documentary web reality series. It follows 10 young ladies as they do all they can to become stars. This show will have mentors and celebrity guests to help guide the girls in the right direction. They will go through what they're calling "Star Boot camp" to whip them into shape for Star Status!!!

There will be 10 episodes for your viewing pleasure that include challenges that lead to "money can't buy" prizes and of course experiences that will never be forgotten.

Where will Iiiiiiii be in all of this you ask? Well I'm glad you did..LOL.. I will be featured makeup artist on the show. I will be working on the photo shoots that the girls will be taking part in on the show. Along side Chris Lanston who is the Make Up Artist Mentor on the show, we will create flawless beauties to be photographed. Seriously, I can't wait!!!

The following information was taken directly from the "To Be a Star" Facebook page as it best describes the series:

To achieve success in modeling, acting or entertainment, it takes more than pretty head shots, an expensive portfolio, or weeks or months of training from some less-than-reputable ‘modeling school.’ Putting 200 pictures of yourself on a bunch of modeling portfolio websites will not turn you into a star either.

There is only ONE way to become a star – surround yourself with people who have already become stars, train with them, learn from them, tap into all of their connections throughout the entertainment industry, and pursue stardom with passion, dedication, and a willingness to go above and beyond to achieve your dreams.

‘To Be a Star’ Academy is a journey like none other – through our program, you will:

* Develop the skills necessary to break into the industry & have success;
* Develop your own personal brand to create your own marketable niche;
* Network with an array of mentors, and their networks, to meet the power brokers of the industry;
* Develop a marketing plan and a business plan to promote yourself;
* Implement both and reach for the Stars
Our objective is to help you maximize your potential. Perhaps you have what it takes to become a Supermodel. Or maybe you have the natural talent to become the next big movie star. Perhaps you can be the next Miley Cyrus, or Britney Spears, or Hayden Panettiere, or Blake Lively.

We don’t want to help you land a magazine spread or a small TV commercial. We want to turn you into a STAR – a truly marketable star, who is versatile enough to become a multi-dimensional talent – appear in magazines, star in television shows and movies, become a top brand endorser in ad campaigns and TV commercials, get your own perfume, your own clothing line or cosmetics contract. Become a STAR.

The first episode premiers on September 7th, 2009. So mark your calendars!! You'll be able to view it on the following websites:

To be taken to their You Tube site, simply click on the title of this blog.
See you there!

Eve's Eye Candy

Ladies and Gentlemen, I give you.... Eve's Eye Candy... (hold for applause..LOL)

Heather Eve began her adventure into the world of fashion at the age of 17 when she attended the Fashion Institute for Design and Merchandising. In her last year of school, she designed and handmade a custom corset for her advanced pattern making class. Not only did it attain recognition from fellow students but was highly encouraged by her instructor to take it to boutiques to sell.

The first boutique Heather walked into ordered 40 custom corsets! After making a corset a day for over a month she decided to make her designs more exclusive. So for the next year and a half she made one of a kind corsets for special orders only.

The corset trend was starting to fade and Heather was on to the next big thing, crystal couture. Heathers line, Hot Toddies, consist of shoes, cell phone covers, Zippos and picture frames all covered with individual Swarovski crystals. Each pair of shoes had around 1200 crystals! It was extremely tedious work and Heather dominated the market.

Bio_2Continuously on the move, Heather started a new adventure in 2008, beaded jewelry. What started out as a hobby brewed into her new business venture, Eves Eye Candy. Simply wearing her creations out of the house gained peoples attention.

Heather attended Precious Metal Clay classes is New York City to further her education in jewelry making.

The sky is the limit for Heather Eve. Along with launching her website in July of 2009, she is offering Precious metal Clay parties for birthdays, baby showers, wedding showers or simple get together. She has completed the Rio Grande Precious Metal Clay certification program and is eager to spread her knowledge!

One of her biggest fulfillment's in life is seeing one of her creations on someone. Also the faces on others when they see their creations finished. In Eve’s eyes no matter how hard times are, everyone deserves a little eye candy!

Good luck to all of you!!

Cleanliness is Next to Godliness.. Isn't that what they say??

As Make Up Artists, we are taught that hygiene is ESSENTIAL. Keeping things clean is the ONLY way to ensure that your client doesn't contract an infection from dirty tools. This is why we all carry alcohol with us, as well as brush cleaner and hand sanitizer. (Or at least you all SHOULD be!!) ...LOL..

Who would have thought that the things we carry with us to keep ourselves and others free from infection would be the one thing that would/could infect us. Sheesh! That sounds like a no-win situation doesn't it? I mean for the LOVE!!!

Today I read this article that describes a recall on HAND SANITIZERS! The FDA did a raid on a manufacturing plant that they found to have contaminated products. The laboratory they raided was Clarcon Biological Chemistry Laboratory in Utah.

The harmful bacteria that the FDA suspects has contaminated their products is one that causes serious skin infection and damage to underlying tissue.. WHAT?! Yeah! Can you believe it?
That's not all, these infections could lead to SURGURY resulting in permanent skin damage.

The FDA recalled the sanitizers back in June after a routine inspection where they found the contamination on top of having found violations. Get this!! The company refused to comply with the original recall direction of destroying all recalled products.

Here are the brands you're going to want to NOT USE!!!
  • Citrusshield lotion
  • Iron Fist Barrier Hand Treatment
  • three Skin Shield Brands
  • two Dermassentials brands
  • two Total Skin Care brands
So, to all you habitually clean people out there, make sure that you're family and friends know not to use those products.

We need to all stay happy, healthy and strong so we can WOW the world with our talent:)
